Last week, I spoke to one of my mother's girlfriends to see if she had any photos, since I've lost mine and other people in my family aren't responding. It of course rekindled some sadness, since we haven't met since her funeral, and the feeling of how hard it is to have to deal with everything alone all the time. What soothed me a little after, was listening to Hawaiian music and looking at Hula, as it always does. There is something very comforting and nurturing about their art, that together with the beauty of nature embraces me. It's the only place in the world, where I've felt safe, and really been met with compassion. With Aloha.
This is also why, I chose to learn this dance, to this song, in 2013, after practicing another variation with my second Kumu Marian Ka'ipo Park in Oahu 2010. This song, Maunaleo, was written by Ke'ali Reichel, when he was grieving his own mother, and in this lies a quiet recognition. I believe that the emotion we feel, when we create art, is the emotion that the audience also will feel.
